This is the first book in a young-adult series set mostly in Australia and New York. I think it's definitely worth recommending, though a little "after school special" at times. The plot revolves around the notion that some people are magic. The caveat is that the more you use your magic, the shorter your life. Most magical people don't live past their 20s. However, if you don't use your magic at all, you go insane. What to do?! The nuances of life in this world are revealed slowly, which helps hold your attention if you're an adult reader.
